Seaside (View)

SeasideThe British coast out-of-season is a surreal place. Where the colourful theme parks and arcades are in stark contrast to the tea coloured sea and bleak deserted streets.

Its distinctive architecture, from carefully planned precincts, with squares, crescents and promenades, to gaudy amusement arcades, beach huts and piers are left in stasis. The sea front waits for the return of summer and with it the holidaymakers.

Within the photographs I have isolated features that are synonymous with the beach as the seaside often inspires nostalgia, for a time when lifes pleasures were, simpler.

Few people are present in this series of photographs in an attempt to make the compositions appear like backdrops or stage sets. It is this quality of artifice that often pervades our experience of the seaside.

About Peter Ainsworth

Peter Ainsworth is a freelance photographer working and living in East London. Ainsworths work is an exploration of the modern landscape, photographing spaces on the periphery, the banal margins of everyday life; along bleak suburban streets, busy ring roads, down city canals, into retail parks and along wind swept coastal paths. Spaces that take up an expanse of the landscape that are glimpsed by the pedestrian or framed through the cars windscreen, yet which slip into the wallpaper of the everyday.
Having graduated Nottingham Trent University in 2001, Ainsworth has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions, as well as undertaking commercial commissions. In September 2003 he was the only photographer to be included in the artists section of the Evening Standards feature, Londons Top 100 Rising Stars.
